TrueCrypt still totally works if you can be sure you found the right version. VeraCrypt is the new replacement but I haven't been ignorant enough to trust it.
The client-server model is fine. The larger issue is people being vocal enough to stop bad actors. The decentralized model is fine too but what's to stop a bad actor with literally unlimited resources building a mega huge server farm in Utah to gain 51% network ownership?
It always comes back to being involved and vocal and occasionally burning same cars and shops to get your way. It works for every group that uses it to get their way.
