Picked up a couple of cheap supercapacitor UPS devices from chinamostfinestgoodlyproductforyou.com...wanted something to hold up a "power out" notifier long enough to get a help message out.

The device will hold a 250mA load up for about 3 minutes, which is exactly what I want. Pretty amazing for $24 shipped.

Basically, we're fucked. Can't build that in the states for $24.

Yeah, that's the only way. Batteries are just far too material intensive to do anything long term.
