I actually do a lot with modulation, but more in the RF realm and some fiber optic. Not sure yet how / if this could apply or fit in.

Pwm is a important thing to learn about, I would recommend reading up and the lm555 timer as you can do PWM analog and at 25 cents per timer it is a deal.
