I think what most people consider elites isnt how it is supposed to be considered. Academia is just an educational institution. Elite is derived from elect and elect is from the word chosen. We are all elite in one way or another and without each aspect life is shit. Elite soldiers, elite plumbers, elite mothers.

That's a good point. We might say "best x" but that really isn't the same as considering that elites exist in all classes of people.
