Nothing wrong with being a carpenter, plumber, etc.

Not at all. I was brought up in a house where trades were the main income. I ended up in tech over time but I still know how to do all of those things. It is a good thing to know how to do the very basics of everything. Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, Auto work, Gardening, Cooking, etc.......

I don't know about "hedge against AI future" but too many youths don't know how to make an omelette.

Auto class? Schools are so commie, kids think that they can public transportation everything.
