Well, they over expanded rapidly and have failed to control costs.

I called this like 2 years ago.

They also opened some stores in places where everyone else left.. For a reason. You can't make money on stores when everyone walking in the door is stealing everything. Its not a "emerging market" its a "dead zone".

From the post:

>Dollar General is closing 96 stores in early 2025, along with 45 locations under its pOpshelf brand. Another six pOpshelf stores will be converted into Dollar General locations, the company said in its latest earnings report released Wednesday. The discount retailer, which operates more than 20,000 stores nationwide, said the closures come after a review of its store portfolio with the shops all not making enough money. The company has not yet announced which stores will be affected. The closures come as Dollar General faces up to the reality of Americans spending less, particularly low-income shoppers. Vasos said many customers are struggling to afford even basic necessities.

96 stores out of 20,000 isn't exactly an apocalypse. That's just shy of 0.5% of the portfolio.

Dollar General burns down and re-opens more stores than that in a year.

Just becoming a little more efficient. Closing stores with high losses due to shoplifting.

It’s always bizarre to go to some far flung town and see one. Also strange to see them within a couple of miles of one another.
