Hey all, needing a bit of advice on what to do with a dog. One of my Grandmas passed very suddenly and very recently, just at the end of last month. We can't take the dog in, so we were having to rehome her. Initially, one of the neighbors took her in with the intent to keep her. However, due to bad tap water giving the dog the shits for 2 days, the neighbor said we'd have to take her back.

We don't want to just drop her off at a shelter. She's an old dog, they'd quickly put her down and my dad couldn't handle the guilt. Neither could I, to be honest. She's a good dog, perfect low energy companion animal. A skipperkey, I don't know the spelling. A little ship dog, no more than 15 pounds. We're already asking around, but it's slow going.

Any advice on what we can do?

Whatever you do, don't give it to the haitians.

There is likely an animal rescue group in your area that will help. They often take dogs that shelters will put down and keep them until they find a home for them.

I've seen homeless people with dogs.

And? That has no bearing on my situation. I'm glad the homeless can have companionship with Man's Best Friend, but for various reasons I cannot.

Switch over to filtered water and let them keep it. But them a Britta or something.

Otherwise, social media apps specifically for your area. Something like Facebook or nextdoor? I know they have local groups. You, like me, probably don't have those. Could make a temporary one or use someone else's.

If there's anyone in your family that already has animals, ask them first. Old dog, not much upkeep on those. Not much time left to keep it, either.

Yeah, dad is going to be putting out feelers on facebook. You're right, I don't use either of those.

But yeah, the neighbor already gave the dog and all the supplies we gave her back. Just dropped that on our lap this morning and said "Not doing it anymore, take the dog back."

She even admitted she forgot about the tap water, just giving it to the dog when she drinks bottled water all the time. But, because the shits didn't clear up within a day of switching to bottled water, she's washed her hands of the dog.

Older dog needs older owners. My grand mother's dog outlived her and needs a new senior companion person...

Use the dogs name...

"Biscuits" needs a new senior companion person...

Photo copy some photos of your fabulous animal. point out this is an old person's dog that needs an old person. Old people don't want to be euthanized either, this message will resonate. (But don't mention euthanizing the dog- they will pick up what you are laying down)

Dog comes with bowl, kennel, leash, tie out etc... Dog requires an owner on City water.

Maybe buy the neighbor a water filter?

If the tap water is giving the dog the squirts, I wonder what it's doing to the neighbor?

Like I said in my response to CanIPlay2, the neighbor drinks bottled water herself all the time. She just didn't think about giving the dog bottled water, and now this happened.
