You're doing well, mine wouldn't have sat there, they would have been after the deer instantly, they're not working types or gundogs though. The retriever cross red lab has an awesome nose and the Huntaway cross is good at herding and stalking. The retriever has a prey drive that is unmatched, I took them for a walk(when the retriever was about 6months old) to a wood that they were unfamiliar with, the wood also had many deer. I lost him for about an hour in total and when he came back both of my dogs went deer chasing together, I know this because I saw them both running through the wood about 30feet behind a large deer going flat out.

I have to be careful where I take them now. But the retriever is more obedient now he's 18months old.

My Brit was not worth a shit in the field for the first couple years but in year 3 he just woke up and now he is the best bird hunting dog I've ever had. He's a machine.
