Does he have kennel cough? One of my dogs used to go through coughing fits and would hack up mucus, but it cleared up on it's own. Could be allergies as those are bad right now, too. Prednisone seems kinda extreme for this, but it depends on whats causing the cough
zyrtec was also recommended
Had the same thing with 2 out of 4 dogs recently. No other symptoms. Cleared up in less than a week. My guess is allergies.
Hopefully he'll be OK. If a vet said pred then follow it but make sure to keep an eye on him. Make sure he's not throwing up or coughing up a lot of mucus. Dogs can eat stuff that won't pass and could cause issues like this. Deep(broad/large) chested dogs can also come up with an issue of where their stomach can actually flip around and cause issues like but it's not very common but is very serious if it happens.
Just keep an eye on him. If he ends up actually throwing up the pred and can't keep anything down then get him to a vet quick.
Is the dog consuming alcoholic beverages or any form of drugs? Prescription/illegal, etc? That might be why the veterinarian didn't give you the medicine or a prescription or even the name of it.
What is your dog secretly up to? Do you know and are aware or is this all a shocking and surprising mustering mystery in this case?
If the dog is a teenager he might be suffering from a combination of angst, rebelling and substance abuse.
fuck no, god damn
Okay. As a person aware of medical combinations deemed illicit or deadly that was my initial inspection and theory based off of the circumstantial evidence presented utilizing my ideas and research. Have you considered giving the dog ground up throat lozenges or cough syrup?
Did they conduct a CT scan during your visit?
My neighbor is a vet, isnt that convenient for the future?
As long as he's drinkin water, hes good. When they quit drinkin water, shit goes bad fast. Ive had 2 live thru parvo or however u spell it. I tell em when theyre pups, no vet. If u dont like it leave. Theyre all still here. I hope it works out. Id be lost without y buddys
Yeah I like to act like he dont mean shit but he does.
Watch a video about collapsing trachea. Sounds like an old man cough.
My old man doggo may have it, but I am not treating it. He is fine, and just does this gaggy single cough thing occasionally. Usually after a drink. I think it can be worse, though. I understand it is treatable.
Does your dog chew stuff? Might have something caught somewhere or he has lots worms and they are gagging him; could be heartworm which could cause really bad things to happen...could be an allergy...could be asthma...could be heart failure...this is also parvovirus season...kennel cough... Prednisone is a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory. Prednisone has to go first pass through the liver so it really shouldn't be given long term and it can also raise blood sugar.
Find a better vet.
doesnt chew stuff,no worms, maybe an allergy, fuck you with your kennel cough. Prednisone isnt long term and tapered off. Heartbeat and temp is normal.
Kennel cough like parvo is really contagios and has nothing to do with the care of the animal.
Just offering ideas man, no judgment. Kennel cough is caused by bordetella virus and is super contagious. Hope your pup gets better.
He may have a cold is his nose extra moist and his eyes look weepy? Give him a little cough medicine and that may clear it up. If he's just hacking and gagging with no weepy eye and runny nose, might be worms, I use PanaCur C or any dog wormer with fenbezole to get rid of them. Try that and see if the cough goes away.
