A dog should respect his master. But a dog is still a dog and, I feel, should bolt off in search of a squirrel or whatever from time to time. But when it comes down to it he should know when to goof around and when to sick balls.
My brother has a beagle that is 100% anti-social and will follow its nose to anything. It's like 100% of the context of its life is smell. It knows no other world. Maybe your dog is just built to care more about smell than relationships (what we normally think about dogs caring about).
And its not how it was trained. A lot of effort has gone into training it right from the beginning. From the day it was a puppy it never gave a fuck about any other thing besides itself and what smells it can find. I know not all beagles are like that but sometimes personality is hard wired in a dog.
I love my giant. 110 lbs of half great dane and german shepard. Never trained him. He kinda just does what i tell him to. Sometimes he gets hard headed. If i change my tone he complies. Think i just got lucky. I would hope he would break bad if shit got crazy but who knows. I would certainly break bad for him. I have been told im a bad owner for not training him. Lol. We live in the middle of nowhere and he brings me an average of 2 rabbits a week for the last 3 years. Im happy. Hes happy. Oh and the ole lady seems to be happy...
