Sheepdogs are so fucking smart. My brother had 2 and when my nephew was 7 or 8 and would swim in the farm dam, they would swim with him and push him back to shallow water if he went out too deep. I used to take them running with me and one would run behind me and one in front, sort of "herding" me the whole way.
