How many of those suicides were from people who were so badly maimed they didn't see any reason to go on living? One of the problems with determining the "cost" of a given military excursions based on troop deaths is that injuries have become substantially more survivable. Nothing quite like using a perfluorocarbon as blood plasma even existed even a few decades ago.

How does this compare to the same number of people over that time period who weren't in the military? The sample size matters. This data might just be showing how safe military operations are compared to the general suicide rate.
