Nice, and looks like the design would scale up quite a bit.

Maybe put the wedge on a linear rail instead of the hinge design. Would allow for forceful closing and controlled opening. It would probably not fare so good when opening, though. This relies upon no current being present at that point in time.

This would work using a solenoid just fine. It would need to be fast to avoid arcing.
