I would have put this in the 3dprinting sub but it does use more than 3d printed parts so DIY made more sense.

From the post:

>You’ve got a laser cutter. You’ve got a 3D printer. What do you make? [Ayushmaan45] suggests a telescope. The modest instrument isn’t going to do serious astronomy with only 8X worth of optics, but it would make a fine spyglass for a youngster. The body is cut from MDF, and there are only a few 3D printed parts. The only other things you need are rubber bands and a pair of lenses. You don’t even need glue. We might have spray painted the inside of the scope black or used some black contact paper to cut down on reflections, although it probably wouldn’t make much difference.

I want a nice telescope so bad!! I know that I have unrealistic expectations though. I want to really see that nebula, I want detail without taking 8 hour time lapse pictures and stitching them together to make a nice photo. I want to point it at a distant galaxy and see amazing detail without spending 10 grand. I want it all, now!!!

I relate man. I really do.

Maybe we can hunt down an abandoned observatory and buy it or something? Between us I think we probably already know all of the people we would need to make it run again.

If I get some of the land I want. You damn well fucking know I am building a personal observatory. You would be on a very, very, short list of people I would let come see it in person.

I want to explore the starts but I guess I was bourn a little too early for that. At least we can see them. Big cities are a cancer to the soul and I need to get out somewhere dark and calm again.

Last few weeks have been hard and only makes me want to get somewhere away from the cities even more now.

I bought land (3 pieces now) in Texas but I still have not managed to move there. I have these folders on my browser and one of them is "House". All the cool features that I want when I get to build my own home and one of my bookmarks is for a home observatory. I'm sure it will raise eyebrows in the neighborhood having a fucking great big dome on my roof!! But I'm also pretty sure that it will be hard to keep the neighbors away when the find out what I can see that they cannot!!!

You start working on that goal and reach out. I know some people that built and have thoughts. Hell, reach out here. There are so many smart people here some probably have already built one or more.

I won't be buying down that far south. I am a northern guy as it seems everyone has figured out.

Poal is not huge but most of the people here are smart and just want a place where they can talk without being attacked. It's amazing to really see the community we have here.
