Fuckin horse hair. This is but one corner of four in the room. Sent the wife and kid to grandpa’s for the day. Took up all the molding and got the plaster from floor to the top of the doors all the way around. Roughly 12x12 room with this funny corner of stair cases.

Do you have any blood left in your arms from working overhead like that? Are you going to replaster, or do something different? Looks challenging. And I'd say you need a taller ladder

The ladder is fine, though it seems they’ve gone out of their way to make the not a step even less of a step. I’ll probably just sheet rock, gotta see how square the framing/lathe is.

Just did this last year, same material! Tell you what, it felt good to wreck shit for a good reason! :)

Isn't this why we have illegals?

You're setting a bad precedent of doing stuff yourself. Image if only half the nation started doing things on our own. It would cause a catastrophe.

I believe we have illegals due to various socioeconomic factors and attitudes such as yours.

Just imagine the Lathers that built that place originally...

No Electric saw

No Nail guns

and if you were really fast you could make $1 a day...

There were saw mills in these parts back in those days, water power! I’m sure they kept they’re saws sharp and drive a nail in one swift blow!

Saw mills would provide the product but all end cuts and rips were by hand also, ever drive a few thousand nails a day? Been there, done that. Your hand gets so cramped you can't open it after you let go of the hammer.

Same here, work like that gave you some good guns though!

Not denying that it’s hard work, just pointing out that they had saw mills. I remember when covid first hit and active hid under a rock, I sawed a cedar tree in half with a handsaw just for something to do.

I was gonna say, whats with those 2 crazy angles, thought it was an optical illusion, lol..keep up the good work brother!

It’s a funny little room, 3 doors, the backside of a stairwell, a window and a radiator… I’m not entirely sure how the wife is going to furnish it.

[–] 1 pt

Yuck. Tear down those nasty lath boards too. You'll thank yourself later.

I was thinking I’d leave em and just put glass paneling up!

Seeing those wood slats behind the plaster brings back some mostly-good memories. Been a long time.

I found getting the plaster out from between the slats where it hardened without breaking the slats can be very tricky, and you kept the whole wall intact. Nice job on that.

I broke a couple in other walls. Sledge, chisel, pry bar, claw hammer… they all have their uses.

If you start having dreams about Keziah Mason or Brown Jenkin, get out fast.

I don’t often remember my dreams, sometimes I wonder if I even dream at all. Last night, however, I did dream and there were a pair of kittens on my porch, one had a funny eye.

Even if you keep the rest of those slats rip out the wacky corner and the bottom couple inches. To match the right size of slats just get the closest plywood sheet and rip it into 3 inch sheets. Plywood is magical furring strips: any thickness you want, flat, cheap, never splits. Any wall you are completely ripping out the slats to reinsulate, use furring strips. Old walls may look straight but they are gay as americas politicians. Even if the insulation looks okay, replace everything. Even if it doesn’t get wet fiberglass has a half-life of 30 years.

There is one magical trick you can do that will triple that walls insulation for a couple inches of thickness. Get xps or eps, whatever is cheaper in your area. 1 inch or 2. Then just nail that into your wall and mark your studs and electrical so you don’t hit it on the other side. Spray foam with just the can or gun all the seams and corners. You will need to get outlet extenders of course. Don’t do this if the idiot ran plumbing in the wall! It will freeze, this insulated incredibly well. Then use 3 inch drywall screws to attach your drywall to the studs, through the xps. Your walls will be straight because the styrofoam will eat all the unevenness. The insulation value is unparalleled.
