I used to make gunpowder when I was a kid. It's a lot easier to make than is shown in this video. You mix the parts together by volume, not by weight, and crush out any large bits if charcoal during the mixing process. I forget the proportions I used, but it might have been 1:1:1. Good quality charcoal helps a lot. The tricky part is getting your batches of gunpower uniform. After you mix each batch, you should test it by lighting a small pile of it. The faster it burns, the better the powder. What you are looking for is a foof! This guy's powder burned very slowly -- so, shitty powder. Storing it is tricky. You want to avoid containers that make sparks. I used a glass pickle jar, which, in retrospect, might not have been the safest container. But I was only around 12 at the time, what did I know?
All I need is something that will blow up stumps, scare the neighbors, and freak out the wife. 75% nitrate,15% charcoal, 10% sulfur is the standard mix for like 200 years.
