Damn, and ideas how I can boost signal in my current location, my hotspot gets about 2 bars and my phone gets literally nothing. Which is how I'm posting right now. Without spending a grand.
Cellular amplifiers aren't cheap, so no, not really. Some carriers will offer a discounted or free to use amplification device if you ask, but YMMV.
There are better hotspots out there, if you're using a device with a SIM you may be able to find a used Cradlepoint device on eBay. These tend to have real antennas, and are designed for commercial use. I have a T-Mobile firmware device here, and I'm in a poor signal area. The Cradlepoint device generally shows all bars lit for signal.
Just be aware that these devices are carrier-specific, you need to get one with firmware for your carrier.
Yeah I'm using a cradlepoint and its 2 bars and my phone is nothing. Cheapest amp I've found is like 900 bucks so I was hoping I could DIY it. but I'm guessing that is a pipe dream.
Wow, even the cradlepoint unit doesn't show anything? Ouch.
Do you have the big paddle antennas for it? https://pic8.co/sh/72DTQY.jpg
Only thing I can think of is try to get that device up high.
My brother just bought a booster and it wasn't terribly expensive. If you like I can ask what he bought.
Please do.
He said he would send me a link tonight. Assuming he doesn't forget, I'll happily relay.

Please note this only works on a subset of frequencies. I had forgotten he did an RF survey and did the ideal freqs and channels for his location and bought specifically for them.
But, this should point you in the general direction. $120 isn't bad.
Speaking of pointing, the provided whip antenna is so so, so he bought a nice omnidirectional. Iirc, gave another bar inside. Also note, the yaggi is a directional antenna. You point it at the desired tower. Though you can certainly look at other options.
Regardless, you can see you don't have to spend a ton to drastically improve things. My brother went from zero bars to crystal clear calls and internet service.
