If you live in a state that does not have stand your ground, or castle laws, bird shot is a viable option for 1 simple reason: accountability in front of a jury. If you're forced to repel an invader for whatever reason, bird shot will fuck up their day for sure, and you can argue in court that you used a less than lethal option rather than resorting to lethal force. Read cases out of CA, Oregon, NY, etc. There are numerous cases where shit like even the caliber of the weapon involved became a factor in the judge/jury decision. My only point is that if your in a major city, and use a gun to defend yourself, you stand a better chance in court rather than trying to explain a dead nigger.
