The more recent court case was a separate matter, about him wasting police time. If they had tried to drag in the perjury it would have been regarded as an attempt to try him twice for the same crime.

Because perjury is a provable lie. A provable lie isn't legally the same as a conviction. If I say "I have never met this man" and then they can show texts and video of us hanging out etc thats perjury. It's a provable lie. A conviction means the prosecution convinced the jury that the charges are justified. There is a distinct legal difference

It's exceptionally rare to charge a convicted defendant with perjury. It's all wrapped up in his overall conviction.
