I think it has been used incorrectly so often it is part of the vernacular.

I've never seen "eek" used in this manner before.

I've seen a lot; "tenant" instead of "tenet", "discreet" and "discrete" swapped either say, same with "hoard and horde", and various other misuses, but not this.
