CRIMINALLY Underrated Band. John Kay saw ALL this coming nearly 60 years ago. Listen to The Ostrich or Monster, those lyrics are even more revealing

There were a few bands of that era that tried to warn us. John Kay being born at the end of WWII in Germany and later escaping W Berlin with his mom at age five probably gave him insight into how things were becoming in America. Steppenwolf was definitely one of my favorite bands as a teenager.

I am VERY lucky. I grew up with an enormously varied musical up bringing. My dad was born in 1930. HUGE Big Band fan so Benny Goodman was GOD to him. It exposed me to Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Ray McKinley etc. My mother ALWAYS had a radio on so I got very familiar with AOR of the time. Carpenters, 5th Dimension, The Association etc. My Brother is 8 years my senior. HE brought The Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Grand Funk and so many others in. He brought The Wolf to me and my first REAL Drum kit. Its been an amazing ride since then. Steppenwolf ALWAYS OOZED Cool. John Kay STILL does

John Kay isn’t your typical rock star and that set him and Steppenwolf apart from the pack. That’s probably why the band never got the recognition they deserve. They weren’t part of the (((Laurel Canyon))) scene.

Lol, my ol’ man hated that “goddamned hippy music”.
