Imagine a clump of viruses vs a clump of spike proteins alone. The whole virus is going to be more permeable than a dense accumulation of relatively small proteins.
How can bare proteins be safer than the whole virus? Spike proteins can work their way into small spaces, accumulating impermeable blockages, and physically skewering cells.
