They don't recognize the unexpected or rare incidents such as this a part of their job. In their own mind, they aren't signing up for the job to put their own lives at risk.

I have a sibling who got out of nursing during the ebola scare around 2016 or so. The idea that she might have to face that was enough to essentially convert her to a stay at home mother. A net positive I'd say.

The police are the same to an extent, they'll go to any extreme in the name of "officer safety", including shooting your well mannered pet dog.

I have mixed thoughts on cops. Seen them do some actual heroic shit , and some pretty crooked shady shit too.
