I suspect this position of his was a compromise for the damage he did while in.

"we hate you for showing that populism and nationalism work. We defeated you in office. If you don't want us (the regime) to destroy you, we'll make you a deal: Destroy your own credibility and you get to continue with whatever meager assets you have left, and be left alone for the rest of your days."

Thats whats going on here.

He put up very mild resistance to the regime, the regime, being neurotic, flipped out, and tried to destroy him. He went in thinking he was a reform candidate and approached it like a business man, where everyone wins if the deals are struck right.

What he failed to realize is business is not politics, and politics aren't business.

Politics is war, and the only real negotiation tactics are all-or-nothing, positional bargaining, and collusion.
