The problem with the Great Barrier Reef is that about a decade ago, a cargo ship destroyed miles of it (leaving toxic leaded paint) after taking a shortcut instead of the planned route (which goes around it).
The other reason why its ecosystem is failing is due to a slight increase of temperature (about a degree Celcius) of the ocean in that area. There's no evidence that it was caused by humans. Solar flares could also be responsible adding the orbital relation between earth and the sun.
