It would seem to me that both sides want to at the moment, other wise why continue with the whole government shutdown over a relatively non political issue.

The issues you are talking about and incessantly distracted by are so minor they don't even warrant mentioning. No politician is seriously talking about the overall direction humanity is taking, and the associated effects on people and the planet. They are just cogs in the machine acting for and reacting to short-term issues, as are you.
