All the compassion, all the justice, all the empathy in the world is within us. Compassion, justice, empathy are real things because they are within us, and we are real. But for these qualities to express themselves in the world requires our actions. When you show kindness and love to a wild animal, and it responds with kindness and love, that is your kindness and love that has filled the heart of the wild animal, and is being returned to you by a loving God, who encompasses the universe. We are the living instruments of goodness and love in the world. Love goes forth from us and is returned to us. We, and only we, make the world a compassionate, gentle, loving place in which to live.
