>A Mesa County woman has been federally charged for allegedly defrauding Medicaid’s Non-Emergent Medical Transportation (NEMT) program of over a million dollars. On Tuesday, Ashley Marie Stevens, 40, was formally charged with six counts of wire fraud, 11 counts of health care fraud, and six counts of money laundering by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado and the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. According to an indictment, from approximately July 2022 to February 2023, Stevens billed Colorado Medicaid under the business name Armistead Twin Rides, LLC., in NEMT rides for Medicaid beneficiaries. Out of the total amount, Stevens allegedly billed Colorado Medicaid over $400,000 for non-emergent personal rides for her and her family and over $150,000 for the rides of four beneficiaries that either did not occur at all or involved a destination that did not include a medical provider or service. Stevens is also alleged to have billed the federal program over $450,000 for trips that were 400 miles or more per patient, per day, with only a small amount corresponding to medical appointments.
