It won't matter. The thief has a "master key" to the box. That master key is used in hundreds or maybe thousands of shared boxes. To re-key one would be to re-key all of them or to carry 1 key per box. They will just get shot/stabbed/robbed again for someone to steal the new "master" in a week too.
