>The Labor Day weekend begins Friday, and domestic travel bookings are 9% higher this year compared to 2023, according to AAA. For many Coloradans, that means spending time in the mountains to celebrate the holiday. One of the main thoroughfares that visitors and natives alike use to get to their destination is westbound Interstate 70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel. Driving through the tunnel, drivers pass not one but two runaway truck ramps. Most have never seen them used, but the most-heavily used runaway truck ramp in Colorado — and in the country — lies on that stretch of highway, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

I almost got to use one of those going over the Rockies when moved from VT to NV. I had rented a Penske because I'd had good luck with them in the past. The place was in a VT ghetto (yes, there are a couple, probably more now) and the guy tossed the keys at me and said 'This is too much truck for a woman but we didn't have the size you rented' and walked away.

None of the normal spiel about any of the rules or anything. It was a 26 foot one and much larger than the size I had ordered. I only had a 1 bedroom apartment move.

I loaded the damned thing up and spent a lot of time trying all the boxes back since I didn't even make a dent and knew I'd be driving for a couple of days. Me and my cat drove that thing and it was fine. I got to Iowa and a nice trucker at a truck stop came over and told me the tires were really low and filled them up for me. The Rockies were a nightmare. The brakes kept overheating so I was stopping at every place I could to cool them down. It took forever. I was sure I was going to need one of those runaway truck things. I had even bundled my cat up in her carrier just in case. As a kid I always thought they looked like fun but I'm glad I didn't have to try one out.

That sounds.. Extremely unpleasant. I'm happy you didn't have to use one of those ramps.
