The spokesperson also said the elk was treating the ball as it would small prey, by headbutting and stomping at it

Carnivorous elk?!

Its not exactly well known but Elk do sometimes eat meat like fish and small mammals and birds.

Well at least they stomp them and gore them before crushing them bit by bit between flat grinding teeth.

Eaten by iron deficient herbivore sounds like a bad way to go.
