Does it occur to anyone else, as it sometimes does to me, that Christianity should really be name Paulanity? Jesus was an inspired holy man with a new and powerful message, no doubt about that, but it was Paul (formerly, the Jew Saul) who really started the Christian religion. Without Paul, what would we have? He clearified points of doctrine, laid down the framework, and unified the message. Thanks to Paul, there was a foundation of principles that allowed the Church to weather the Gnostic heresy in the 2nd-4th centuries. Jesus provided the coal to burn in the fire of faith, but it was Paul who built the furnace in which it would be burned, and laid down the ductwork to carry its heat to all the rooms in the house.
