I think it is hated because it is true, and darkness hates light. The jews hate Jesus as the messiah because a martyred/dead messiah is a "stumbling block" for them. Many believed that the messiah was going to first be a military leader (see Psalm 110, where he is a priest, a king, and a warrior). Jesus fulfilled all those roles, but went to war against sin and death.
