8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. - James 2:8-9 (KJV)
James calls this the “royal law”, to love your neighbor as yourself, and it was first said in the Old Testament (Leviticus 19:18), and quoted by Jesus as the second greatest commandment (Matthew 22:39). If we fulfil this law, we will be fulfilling the entire Old Testament Law given through Moses (Galatians 5:14). Praise God for putting the entire law of works, into two commands of love. Now we don’t have to work at self-righteousness by doing things, but only have to believe in Jesus, love God and our neighbors, to be righteous with the Father.
If you have respect for persons, means that you treat people differently, like being prejudice due to race, prosperity, etc., and it is sin to treat some people different than others. God is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34), as He views us all the same, and He doesn’t want any of us to perish, but all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). If we could just get rid of all our prejudices, and treat all people the same way, it would solve many problems in our society today. This problem is just as prevalent in the churches today, as in the rest of the world, and it just should not be that way. All Christians (little Christ’s), should act like Christ, as we are part of His body, and Jesus loved all people the same. If God can love all His creation, then why can’t we, as we are made in His image (Genesis 1:27), and are part of the body of Christ (Romans 12:5)? Let us all try and get rid of any prejudice that we might have, and glorify our Lord by being as He is.
