25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; - Eph 5:25 (KJV)
If husbands would only do as this verse says, there would not be many unhappy wives, or many divorces. Think about how Jesus loves the church, and came and died for us, to start the church age, and bring us back into fellowship with the Father (John 17:3). If all husbands could just show this much unconditional love to their wives, giving them the love and attention without their deserving it, then marriage would be truly heavenly. Men tend to give their wives what they deserve, and not unconditional love. Praise God that Jesus didn’t give us all what we deserved, but instead loves us with the AGAPE, God’s kind, of love, that is not based on our being worthy of it.
Paul had just taught on submitting yourselves to each other (Ephesians 5:21), as being how marriage is supposed to be. The wife should submit to the husband, as her head, as Christ is head of the church (Ephesians 5:22-23). If both parties submit to each other, then most conflict would disappear, as if both are submitted to the Lord, and each other, then most areas of conflict would disappear. Paul went on to say for the wife to reverence the husband, and the husband to love the wife as himself (Ephesians 5:33), as the wife has more need of love, and the man more need of respect. Praise God for giving us instructions such as this.
