17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. - 1 John 2:17-18 (KJV)
John had just spoken of the world’s sins (1 John 2:16), and now he points out that the world, and all it’s sins, will pass away, but those who do the will of God will never pass away. John had already made the point that if you love the world, you can not love God (1 John 2:15), as the two are incompatible. Jesus said, if you love me you will keep my commandments (John 14:15), so if we truly love Jesus, and the Father, we will strive to keep His commandments, and then will abide with Him forever. Our eternal salvation depends on obeying Jesus (Hebrews 5:9).
John was saying it was the end times in his day, as the spirit of antichrist was active back then, but all the signs are now in place for the end times, so we must truly be close. The spirit of antichrist is sure active today, as most of the world has turned against Christians, and the sin in the world is unbelievably evil everywhere. Jesus said that the last thing that must happen, is that the Gospel must be preached throughout the whole world (Matthew 24:14), and with all the Christian satellite networks now, that is sure happening. Jesus told us to watch, as we can not know the day and time that He will come again (Matthew 24:13), so we had better be watching and ready for His return, as it will be soon. Jesus said to look up when all these signs happen, as our redemption draws nigh (Luke 21:28), so I am looking up and watching, because our Lord Jesus is about to return – praise God.
