4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. - Romans 15:4 (KJV)
The scriptures were written for us to learn from, and if you will study the Old Testament as well as the New, you will learn a lot about God, and what He likes and dislikes, as well as what is expected of us. You do not have to learn everything the hard way, by making the same mistakes, as all the many examples in the bible give us a guide that we should live by. All the scripture is given by God, and is good for our learning (2 Timothy 3:16), and we are foolish if we don’t study it and renew our minds (Romans 12:2).
Patience, comfort, and hope, do not come by someone laying hands on you, or by your praying for them, but they come through the scriptures, and by getting to know God intimately. The scriptures are wonderful at building up our hope of the future, as they have so many wonderful promises for us to look forward to. Hope is a positive imagination and it is the beginning of faith. You must first hope for something before you can build your faith up for it, and faith is what pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). Hope, like faith, is something you can’t see (Romans 8:24), but you believe for it to be real, and to happen. When you have hope over a period of time, it will cause you to develop patience, and faith. Thank you Lord for giving us the scriptures and all the wonderful promises, which we can hope for in the future, as well as learn from today.
