Judas did not betray Jesus. He was Jesus's most loyal friend and follower. He did exactly what Jesus told him to do. Jesus lied to him, and told Judas that no harm would come to Jesus from Judas's apparent betrayal. When Judas realized that he had caused the death of Jesus, he hanged himself in remorse. Jesus told Judas that God would shield him from harm, and that the Romans could not execute him. When Jesus realized his mistake, he spoke the famous words to God, "Why have you forsaken me?" Basically, Judas realized sooner than Jesus himself that Jesus was going to die on the cross. Jesus expected to be miraculously saved from death, but it didn't happen.
