We were reading mathew today, and im still confused why judas betrayed jesus. i could understand if judas was led by greed, but then he hangs himself. and then there's the issue of why judas needed to betray him in the first place, not like jesus himself would have been hard to find at the time, since he was preaching literally everywhere he went.

Simple. He didn't believe in Jesus and his teachings.

The silver was just a rouse. Red Herring.

this isn't it at all.

judas didn't betray Jesus for the silver or because he didn't believe in His teachings.

he betrayed Jesus because he expected this to force His hand and cause Him to overtake Rome, but did not expect Jesus to simply allow Himself to be captured and command His followers to drop their swords.

judas did it for power, he wanted to see Jesus rule.

Judas did it only for one reason -- because Jesus ordered him to do it.

He did it for the money.

His faith was in himself, not Jesus.

he did not do it for the tiny amount of silver.

he arguably loved Jesus more than any of the other disciples and wanted to see His teachings codified as law.

he was misguided and fucked it all up.

you originally said he didn't do it for the silver, but merely because he did not believe in the teachings. if this was actually the case he wouldn't have killed himself racked with guilt.

Jewdus....

depends how you read the passage.

John 13:26 - Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

This fulfils King Davids prophesy from psalm 41:9 from 970BC - Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned their heel against me.

Jesus had to die to fulfil his role, and a close friend had to betray him. Whether this could have been someone else, or was always going to be Judas is not for us to know. Judas played the role that god laid out for him. Personally i dont think it was betraying jesus that condemned him, but hanging himself in shame wont have done him too many favours.

We were just hearing this section today in church. I came here to say this, but you said it way better than I would have.

I'd just add that it also said that "Satan entered into him" when he ate the bread.

I think what damned him is that he couldn't bring himself to repent, and instead killed himself. It was always his part to play, but what he did afterward showed that he wasn't one of God's flock. Couldn't forgive himself, so he didn't think God would either.

I think the jews wanted to take him in secret; they were afraid of the crowds. They also wanted to wait till after passover but Judas forced their hand. They needed Judas to lead them to Jesus. I don't know why Judas didn't seek the Lord's forgiveness. Jesus would have forgiven him.

Judas was a communist, and by communist, i mean, a jew rabidly bent on upending the existing order through violence.

Jesus was a lot closer to the bhudda, middle way and what not. This was betrayal to Judas, so really Judas didn't see himself as doing anything wrong till later.

For thirty pieces of silver.

Judas did not betray Jesus. He was Jesus's most loyal friend and follower. He did exactly what Jesus told him to do. Jesus lied to him, and told Judas that no harm would come to Jesus from Judas's apparent betrayal. When Judas realized that he had caused the death of Jesus, he hanged himself in remorse. Jesus told Judas that God would shield him from harm, and that the Romans could not execute him. When Jesus realized his mistake, he spoke the famous words to God, "Why have you forsaken me?" Basically, Judas realized sooner than Jesus himself that Jesus was going to die on the cross. Jesus expected to be miraculously saved from death, but it didn't happen.

Some people think that Jesus was a twin. One of his disciples, Thomas, was also called Didymus, which means twin.

[–] 2 pts

So because Thomas was a twin you believe Jesus was a twin? How does logic lead you to that?

Why did Judas have to identify Jesus?

[–] 0 pt

Because Jesus's acts were notable, but in a crowd he looked like just another blue collar guy.

[–] 0 pt

It was dark and that's what he offered. He would identify Jesus for the 30 pieces of silver.

some people

Hah!

That is the stupidest thing I've heard in a while, and I'm on poal regularly.

Jesus was the ONLY Son of God ("monogeneis", for you Greek lovers)

He was a human...and Thomas may have just looked like him. OP asked why Judas would have had to identify him. Maybe one of his disciples looked just like him was my reply and I gave possibly out of context scripture as evidence. Duh.

Clearly you didn't read much about Jesus, or the book "Putting Jesus in His Place."

Jesus received the Honors due only to God; He shares Attributes that only God has; He is called Names that are reserved for God; He does the Deeds that only God can do; He has a Seat on the throne of God.

Jesus is fully divine. You will die in your sins unless you believe this (His words, not mine).

Spoiler alert. In one gospel, Judas hangs himself. In another gospel, his guts split open and he falls down dead. Different second hand reports based on passed down oral reports finally written down by reporters, not participants or witnesses.

/Flame war commence.
