6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, - 1 Peter 2:6-7 (KJV)
Peter has been telling us to be living stones of the house that Jesus is the corner stone of. This verse is quoting from Old Testament scripture (Isaiah 28:16), and it always points to Jesus as being the corner stone of the church building, where the ones that believe in Jesus are the building itself. This same point is used elsewhere in the New Testament (Romans 9:33), always with Jesus as the corner stone, and those that believe on Him as not being ashamed (confounded) (Romans 10:11).
If you have been born again, and made Jesus as your Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10), then you will believe that He is precious, as He was God in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16), and our God is most precious. Elsewhere in scripture the word translated “disallowed” here, was translated “rejected”, so this is saying that those that reject Jesus as their Savior, have rejected the very cornerstone of the Church. Jesus used this same term when He was talking with the Scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10), and referred to Himself as being the cornerstone of the New Testament Church. Peter goes on to talk about Jesus being the stumbling stone and rock of offence to those who stumble at the Word (Romans 2:8), but calls those that believe a chosen generation, royal priesthood and holy nation (Romans 2:9) – Wow, to think that we, who believe, are all those things. The last thing he says is we are a peculiar people, and I can relate to that one for sure. Praise God for loving us peculiar people.
