3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. - Luke 4:3-4 (KJV)

Notice that the first thing the devil said to Jesus, was to question who He was – the Son of God (Luke 3:22). The devil will always play on our doubts, as to who we are in relationship with God, and this is what he did with Jesus. Our doubts and insecurities will always play into the devil’s hand, but not in this case with Jesus. The bible says that Jesus was tempted in all ways, as we are (Hebrews 4:15), and there are only three areas of sin that the devil has (1 John 2:16), which is lust of flesh, lust of eyes, and pride of life, and these are the root of all sins.

Jesus answered the devil with the Word of God and that is the way that we are to answer the devil when he comes at us. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), and is the Christians offensive weapon, and must be used against the devil to defeat him. This is one of the main reasons you must renew your mind with the Word of God (Romans 12:2), as you can not resist the devil without knowing the bible, and if you use the Word against him, he must flee the believer (James 4:7). The spoken Word of God is so very powerful, and it is described as the “sword of His mouth”, and is what Jesus uses to defeat the enemies when He returns next time (Revelations 19:15). We, who are born again, have the power given us, to use the Word of God to defeat the devil in all cases, and we must know it, and use it. Praise God for His Word.
