Someone once told me the concept of "turning the other cheek" was from a similar thing on the roads in Rome. The soldiers were allowed to strike people getting out of line, so "turning the other cheek" wasn't an act of contrition or humility, it was more like "hit me again with your shit wiping hand, faggot, the first slap was bitchmade."
