18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. -1 Cor 14:18-19 (KJV)
Speaking in tongues is speaking by the Spirit, as the Spirit gives us utterance (Acts 2:4). It is not speaking a known language, or foreign language, but is letting the Spirit that lives within the born again believer, speak through us to God, in a heavenly language of angels (1 Corinthians 13:1). Paul is saying that he speaks in tongues more then all those in the church did, but it is for the individual to let the Spirit speak to God, not for the Church. If you were born again, and were baptized like Jesus commanded, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19), then you received the Holy Ghost at that time, as Jesus did when baptized by John. One of the gifts of the Holy Ghost is to speak in tongues, but it is something you have to want to do, and have the faith for, before you can do it.
If you were raised in a church that taught that the Spiritual Gifts all passed away with the apostles, which is incorrect, then you probably have never spoken in tongues, as it is not something that you are forced to do. It is a very powerful prayer language, and because it is the Spirit speaking to God, it contains all the wisdom of Jesus, and can be interpreted so you can benefit from it (1 Corinthians 14:13). You must be in strong faith, and desire to speak in tongues, as well as free from all the unbelief that religion has given you, before you can learn to speak in tongues. Speaking in tongues builds up your most holy faith, and keeps you in the love of God (Jude 1:20-21). Once you learn to pray in tongues, it becomes very easy to do, but to learn takes faith and desire. Praise God for our Spiritual Gifts.
