3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. - Romans 10:3-4 (KJV)

This is speaking of the Jews, who were not aware of God’s righteousness, and were working under the law to try and be righteous with God with their own self-righteousness. There are two kinds of righteousness, one we try to earn on our own, which is self-righteousness, and is earned by your own actions of trying to be holy by keeping the law (Philippians 3:9). This type of righteousness is like filthy rags to God (Isaiah 64:6), and is not acceptable to God.

The other kind of righteousness is one that God provides for us, and it is perfect. This righteousness is given to us when we are born again, through faith in Jesus Christ, and is a grace gift that we do not earn by our works of the law. The “end” in this verse is not saying that the law no longer exists, but the Greek word means the point aimed at, or conclusion, of the law, as Christ came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it (Matthew 5:17). It was amazing that the Jews had missed Jesus being the Christ, as they had hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament predicting all that happened to Jesus. By missing His coming, they missed out on the God given righteousness that He brought to us, and most of them continued to try and earn self-righteousness under the law – which is impossible for salvation (Romans 3:20). Thank you Lord for giving us your righteousness as a grace gift, as we could never earn it ourselves. Praise God.
