Daily Devotional

July 18

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. - John 14:23-24 (KJV)

If you are born again, and truly love Jesus, then you will want to keep His words, and follow all His commandments. If we love Jesus and keep His word, the Father will love us, and the whole God-Head will come and dwell within us. Wow – what a wonderful promise this is, and we become the temple of God, as well as the Holy Spirit and Jesus. This verse does not say that if you want the Father to love you, you must keep the words of Jesus, as that would be works of the law. The whole point is, if you love Jesus and keep His words, then He and the Father will love you. To assure your eternal salvation, you must obey Jesus (Hebrews 5:9), as your name can be blotted out of the book of life (Revelation 3:5).

If you don’t love Jesus, you won’t want to keep His words, so one way to tell if you are born again, and love Jesus, is whether you try to keep His words and commandments. If you say you are born again and yet don’t show any fruit of salvation, then you can’t be telling the truth. If you get born again, your “want to” changes, and you will want to be holy, as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). The difference between works of the law, and works of faith, is all in the heart attitude, and what your faith is in – whether in your righteousness or in Jesus righteousness. Praise God that He looks on the heart, and He knows what our motivations are, and if we are serving Him out of love or obligation.
