15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. - John 14:15 (KJV)

If you truly love Jesus, and are born again, you will have your “want to” changed, and you will desire to serve Him and keep His commandments. This is not saying that if you keep His commandments then you will love Him, but it is saying that if you love Him you will keep His commandments. Many people think that this is something that they must do, but it is not a work of the law that you must do, but it is something you will want to do if you truly love Jesus (1 Peter 1:15). Many Christians are still being taught that they must do certain things to earn the favor of God, and to be blessed by Him. That is to live under the law, and you can not be saved by works of the law (Romans 3:20).

The Lord gave us believers a new commandment to love one another, as He has loved us (John 13:34). He also summed up the entire law given through Moses, by saying that we need to love God above all, and love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). What an awesome thing it was to take the entire law of thousands of rules and regulations, and bring it down to just love – Wow! This sure does illustrate that God is love (1 John 4:8), and that is why we now can fulfill the entire law by loving, instead of doing. That is the good news of the gospel, and is the grace that Jesus brought to us who believe in Him. Praise God for Jesus.
