26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. - Romans 8:26 (KJV)

Many people, who have thought that this groaning in the Spirit was speaking in tongues, have misunderstood this verse. It is just saying that the Holy Spirit will help us when we are having trouble knowing how to pray about a situation, as the Spirit will intercede with us (not for us), and help us to pray properly. The infirmities it is speaking of, is not a sickness, but a weakness in our human ability to be able to know how to intercede in a situation, so the Spirit will help us with this groaning. The Spirit will not do this by itself, but only will join us, when we are praying, to help us to know how to pray properly.

Jesus, who was sinless, and God in the flesh, also had to have the Spirit help Him twice with groaning in the Spirit when He raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:33, 38). If Jesus needed this help then you can be sure that we need it also, when we face a situation that we do not know how to pray properly. If you are a born again believer, then you have the Holy Spirit living in you, and you can draw on this groaning in the Spirit when needed. It is something that will not normally be audible, and you may not even know when it happens, but the Spirit will join with you, and help you, at times when you need it. God is so good to give us all the tools we need to serve Him, and glorify Him. Thank you Jesus.
