6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. - Romans 8:6-8 (KJV)

Notice that carnal minded IS death, not just leads to death, and the bible uses death to mean all sorts of sickness, disease, poverty, etc. The bible uses carnal and flesh both to refer to having our minds on things of this world, instead of on God. To be spiritually minded IS life and peace, not just headed that way. If you want life and peace in your life, then you must keep your mind on spiritual things. Being Word minded on the things in Scripture is being spiritual minded, and Jesus said His words were spirit and life (John 6:63).

When we are thinking only on the things of this world (carnal minded), we are in opposition to the things of God, as the two are opposite. You can not just think on worldly things, and be serving God, as that is impossible. Even a born again Christian can still walk after the flesh, and by doing so, be at odds with God. Walk after the spirit and serve God with all your heart (Romans 12:1), as that is the least we can do for the one who has saved us.

Being “in the flesh” is being unsaved, and the unsaved can not ever please God. Even a Christian that is born again, can walk after the flesh, but is not in the flesh anymore, as he is given the spirit of Jesus to live within him (Galatians 4:6). All Christians should walk after the spirit to be pleasing to our Father. Praise God for Jesus.
