Daily Devotional

June 11

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. - Matt 3:13-15 (KJV)

John was baptizing people for repentance and the remission of their sins (Mark 1:4), and Jesus was sinless, so that was not the reason for His asking John to baptize Him. I believe that there were at least 3 reasons for Jesus needing to be baptized by John.

  1. It was to announce the beginning of Jesus ministry to the world, and let the people know that He was the Messiah that John spoke about, and paved the way for His ministry.

  2. It was to have the Holy Ghost come upon Jesus (Matthew 3:16), as well as having the Father acknowledge His Son (Matthew 3:17). Also it set an example for all who are born again, to be baptized, and receive the Holy Ghost, when it is done as Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:19).

  3. Also John was of the line of priests, as his father was a priest (Levite), and his mother was a daughter of Aaron (Luke 1:5), so I believe that this is when the priesthood changed from the Levites to Jesus being a priest after the order of Melchisedec (Hebrews 5:5-6).

Jesus knew this was the way He needed to begin His ministry, and told John to do it, and Jesus then went on to minister to the world. John was the greatest of all the Old Testament people (Matthew 11:11), and what he did to prepare the way for Jesus was so very important. – Praise God.
