18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. - Romans 7:18-19 (KJV)

How true this is, that in our own self, there is nothing good. Some might say that isn’t so, as they feel they are good in themselves, but compared to God’s holiness, it is far from good (Isaiah 64:6). The NIV translation of the bible, translates the Greek word “SARX”, that was translated “flesh” in this verse, as being “sinful nature”, but that is wrong. Our sinful nature was crucified with Christ (Romans 6:6), and we no longer have a sinful nature, but a godly nature. This is why Paul put “that is, in my flesh” in this verse, because in the spirit he had the spirit of Christ living in him (Acts 9:17), as well as the whole Godhead. Just because our sin nature is no longer in the born again believer, doesn’t mean that we never sin. It does mean that we desire to live holy for the Lord, but we don’t always do so.

This is true also, that even though we know what good we should do, if we are walking in the flesh, we fail to do what is right, but seem to always do that which is evil. What Jesus said comes out of the heart of man, is all sort of evil things (Mark 7:21-22), and those that are not born again, do not have the ability to always do the right thing. Those that have Jesus living in them will have the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) in their hearts, and it will allow them to be able to be holy in their actions, if they walk in the spirit. Praise God for the fruit of the spirit.
